One of our larks is flying the nest for new adventures and so we are looking for a new member who can move in mid-January, we are also looking for more prospective members. We want people who can commit to the project for at least a year.
We’re based in a 7 bedroom ex-council house in Bevendean, Brighton, that backs onto the Downs and has a large garden. We are a vegan house, non-smoking indoors with 2 dogs. Rent for the room is £334 a month, although there is also £10 a week kitty and £35 a month for bills. We are a friendly bunch and we eat communally, with ideally each member cooking for everyone once a week. The house still needs work so there’s plenty of opportunity to get things done.
We would like to live with someone who understands the importance of communication and actively seeks responsibility. The dogs are a big part of life in the house and it’s vital that you enjoy spending time with them. We will prioritise activists, and our members include feminist campaigners, eco-activists, people involved in the local social centre and prisoner solidarity. We’re queer friendly, aged 23-31 some members are students and others work in libraries, homeless services, gardening and care work. Many of us are creative and like drawing and making music. It’s not a party house but the structure isn’t very soundproof so you would need to be okay with hearing other people occasionally, and being aware of noise.
We are members of Radical Routes and that commits us to going to quarterly gatherings to represent our co-op. Living in a co-operative involves more work than a normal rental property. This includes keeping on top of our finances, attending regular house meetings, attending co-operative events, maintenance and organising house work days, etc. No one person has to do all of this, but you shouldn’t apply if you don’t have any time to commit to the day-to-day running of the co-op.
It’s still a relatively new house and we want people to contribute to shaping the co-op, as well as doing the ongoing maintenance. In the longer term want to build an extension to give us more communal space as what we have is small.
We are an easy cycle to town or the bus stop is round the corner from us.
